LookAway alternatives for Mac, checked October 2026

Keep LookAway if you want the most complete break app on the Mac and do not mind paying for updates. The LookAway alternatives worth your time each fix one thing. Time Out is free and can also wait for your calls, if your Mac runs macOS 26. DeskRest has call detection for a one time price. Caesura gives you guided breaks on Mac, Windows and Linux. Stretchly is free and open source. And Mossy never shows a break screen at all.

By Alban. I make one of these five, so weigh that section accordingly. Every version, price and size was read on the app's own site, its GitHub releases or its Mac App Store page on 11 October 2026.

What LookAway does well

Credit first, because LookAway earned it. Version 2.4.10 shipped on 30 September 2026 and its author has been at it since 2023. Its Smart Pause watches your camera and microphone, video playback, focus apps, games and screen sharing, and holds the break until you are done. It adds posture and blink reminders, a usage score, planned breaks at fixed times, Shortcuts, and an iPhone companion that mirrors your breaks. Nothing else here does all of that.

Why people look for an alternative

Three reasons keep coming up, and the clearest place to read them is its own Show HN thread from June 2026.

The licence. $19 buys one Mac and one year of updates. After that the app keeps working, and another year of updates costs half price. Fair enough as a business, but one commenter said it reads like a subscription pretending to be a one time purchase, and on the Mac App Store it is one: $4.99 a month or $14.99 a year.

The weight. The download is 35 MB, and one commenter said they would not give up "$29 or 150MB RAM" for it. I have not measured its memory myself, so take that as one person's number.

It still interrupts. Smart Pause moves the break, it does not remove it. The hardest mode removes skipping entirely and it can lock your Mac when a break starts. One user in that thread described a "love-hate relationship" with the warning that pops up a minute before a long break. If the break screen is the problem, better timing will not fix it.

The five alternatives, side by side

AppWhat your screen doesWaits for callsPriceDownloadRuns on
LookAway2.4.10, for reference A heads up, then a break screen. Skip can be disabled. Yes, camera and microphone $19, one year of updates 35 MB macOS 13+
Time Out3.1 The screen fades into a theme. Postpone and skip in a small panel. Yes, meeting scripts for FaceTime, Teams, Zoom Free, supporter tiers $4.99 to $59.99 10.5 MB macOS 26. Version 2.9.7 for 10.15+
DeskRest1.20.0 A notification and a countdown at your cursor, then a break window. Yes, video calls and meetings 7 day trial, then $24.99 once 10.4 MB macOS 14.2+
Caesura1.3.0 Your choice per break: an overlay, a banner or a notification. Yes, for supported calls, optional 14 day trial, then €14 once 3.3 MB macOS 14+, Windows, Linux
Stretchly1.22.1 A break window, full screen if you turn it on. No, but pauses on Do Not Disturb and listed apps Free, open source 185 MB macOS, Windows, Linux
Mossy0.2.20, mine Nothing happens to your screen. A plant in the corner wilts. Holds its reminder while your microphone is in use Free 1.8 MB macOS 12+

Sizes are the direct download from each official site or GitHub release, in decimal megabytes. LookAway's is 34.6 MB through the Mac App Store, Time Out's 5.5 MB, Caesura's 1.5 MB. Stretchly's is the arm64 disk image.

Time Out, the free one that also reads calls

Time Out is the closest thing to LookAway that costs nothing. It is native, the break is a slow fade into a theme rather than a screen slamming shut, and its rules can postpone a break during calendar events, Focus, full screen apps and calls. LookAway's own comparison page says Time Out has no meeting deferral. Dejal's page says its meeting scripts recognise active calls in FaceTime, Teams and Zoom, and I am going with the people who make it.

The catch is the system. Version 3.1 needs macOS 26, so an older Mac stays on 2.9.7. If that is you, I listed what still ships for older Macs.

DeskRest, call detection without the yearly renewal

DeskRest covers the part of LookAway most people actually buy it for: it pauses for video, calls and Focus modes. A countdown follows your cursor so the break never comes out of nowhere, and the exercises are ones you write. $24.99 once for one Mac, after a seven day trial. It needs macOS 14.2.

Caesura, guided breaks on every system

Caesura is the one to take if you want the break to tell you what to do, and if you also use Windows or Linux. Six kinds of reminder, from eyes to illustrated wrist movements to a breathing guide, merged into one break when they fall close together. You pick per break between an overlay, a small banner and a notification. €14 once, one licence for all three systems, and the download is 3.3 MB.

Stretchly, if it has to be free and open source

Stretchly does not read your calls, but it pauses on Do Not Disturb, after five minutes idle, and while apps you list are open, which gets you most of the way. The break is a window, and the Mac build is 185 MB because it is an Electron app. More in the Stretchly alternatives.

Mossy, if better timing is not the answer

I built this one, so here is what you can check in a minute rather than what I would like you to believe.

LookAway's answer to a badly timed break is a better timed break. Mossy's answer is no break screen at all. A small plant sits in a corner of your desktop and dries out while you work, with the minutes written under it. When it is thirsty it asks, and if you say no it waits a while before asking again. If your microphone is in use or a video is playing, it holds the question until you are done. There is no dim, no lock, no full screen, and no setting to add one.

When you do take a break, it is written from one sentence you gave it once, like "stretch my back" or "teach me a Spanish word", one instruction at a time, with a timer. Between 11 September and 10 October 2026, across 30 machines that leave the daily counters on, 61 % of the breaks Mossy offered were taken, 309 of 504.

When to keep LookAway instead

If you want posture and blink reminders, usage stats and your breaks mirrored on your iPhone, nothing here replaces all of that. Keep LookAway.

If you want to be forced, LookAway's hardest mode does it and Mossy never will. And if you want an app that talks to nothing, Mossy sends one request per break, because the exercise is written on the spot. No account and no tracker, and the privacy page lists everything that leaves your Mac, but one request is not zero.

FAQ

Is there a free alternative to LookAway?

Time Out is free, native and can postpone breaks during calls, but its current version needs macOS 26. Stretchly is free and open source but does not detect calls. Mossy is free with no paid tier, and holds its reminder while your microphone is in use.

Is LookAway a subscription?

Bought directly, no: $19 is a one time payment and the app keeps working, with one year of updates included and later years at half price. On the Mac App Store it is sold as a subscription or a $49.99 lifetime purchase.

Which LookAway alternative works on Windows?

Caesura and Stretchly both run on macOS, Windows and Linux. LookAway lists Windows as coming soon.

Does Mossy block or dim my screen?

Never, and there is no setting for it. The plant wilts in a corner and a counter shows the minutes you have been working. Ignoring it is a normal way to use it.
