Best break reminder apps for Mac, compared October 2026

The best break reminder app for Mac is the one whose break you will not skip, and that comes down to one thing: what it does to your screen. Take Stretchly if you also work on Windows or Linux. Take Time Out if your Mac runs macOS 26 and you want the free native classic. Take LookAway if your breaks keep landing in meetings. Take Restier or Caesura if you want to be told what to do. And if any break window at all is what you hate, Mossy never shows one.

By Alban. I make one of these nine, so weigh that section accordingly. Every version, price, size and system requirement was read on the app's own site, its GitHub releases or its Mac App Store page on 11 October 2026.

The only question that matters

Every app here can count to twenty. What separates them is the moment the timer runs out. Some take the whole screen. Some dim it. Some slide a banner in. One does nothing at all to your screen. That moment decides whether you keep the app past the first week, because a break that lands mid sentence gets skipped, and an app whose breaks you always skip gets deleted.

I know because we deleted all of them. Ten hours a day in a chair, a bad back for years, and an ACL repair last October that added months of physio and even more sitting. My wife is an architect with the same chair and the same hours. Every app we tried died the same way: the break arrives, you skip it, it is gone by day three. So this comparison is sorted by that moment, not by feature count.

The nine, side by side

AppWhat your screen does when a break is dueInside the breakPriceDownloadRuns on
Stretchly1.22.1 A break window on every display, full screen if you turn it on. Strict mode removes skip. One idea from a list, with a countdown. Free, open source 185 MB macOS, Windows, Linux
Time Out3.1 The screen fades into a theme. Postpone and skip sit in a small panel. A theme you can rewrite in HTML. Free, supporter tiers $4.99 to $59.99 10.5 MB macOS 26. Version 2.9.7 for 10.15+
LookAway2.4.10 A heads up first, then a break screen. It waits while you are on a call or watching a video. Eye rest, with your own messages and backgrounds. $19, with one year of updates 35 MB macOS 13+
BreakTimer2.0.3 A notification you can start when ready, or a full screen break window. Your own message. Free, open source 209 MB macOS, Windows, Linux
Restier1.13.1 Full screen on every display by default, or a lighter panel on one. Guided steps: movement, breathing, eyes, posture. 14 day trial, then €19.99 once or €7.99 a year 65 MB macOS, Windows, Linux
Caesura1.3.0 Your choice per break: an overlay, a small banner or a notification. Eyes, walking, illustrated wrist moves, water, posture, breathing. 14 day trial, then €14 once 3.3 MB macOS 14+, Windows, Linux
DeskRest1.20.0 A notification and a countdown that follows your cursor, then a break window. Exercises you write yourself. 7 day trial, then $24.99 once 10.4 MB macOS 14.2+
Pandan1.18.1 Nothing by default. A timer in the menu bar, and an optional gentle reminder. Nothing. It is a timer, not a break. Free 6.4 MB macOS 26. Older builds for 11+
Mossy0.2.20, mine Nothing happens to your screen. A plant in the corner wilts, and a counter climbs. One exercise, written from a sentence you wrote once. Free 1.8 MB macOS 12+

Sizes are the direct download from each official site or GitHub release, in decimal megabytes. Stretchly's is the arm64 disk image. Through the Mac App Store some are smaller: Time Out 5.5 MB, Restier 57.1 MB, Caesura 1.5 MB. App Store prices also differ from direct prices for LookAway, Restier and DeskRest, which sell subscriptions there.

The ones that take your screen

Stretchly is free, open source and the only serious option if you also work on Windows or Linux. It is not naive about timing: it pauses on Do Not Disturb, after five minutes idle, and while apps you list are open. But the break is a window by design, and the Mac build weighs 185 MB because it is an Electron app. Its own pages also disagree on whether it needs macOS 12 or 13. If the window is what you skip, read the Stretchly alternatives.

Time Out is the Mac native classic, free, and the fade into a theme is still the gentlest way any app here takes the screen. Its rules can postpone a break during calendar events, Focus, full screen apps, and calls in FaceTime, Teams or Zoom. The catch: version 3.1 needs macOS 26, so older Macs are parked on 2.9.7. I wrote up what to use instead on an older Mac.

BreakTimer is free and open source like Stretchly, and since version 2 it starts with a quiet notification and only counts down after a minute. Two things to know: it is 209 MB, and its last release was November 2025.

Restier is the one to pick if you want the break to tell you what to do. Each break is a short guided sequence for your body, eyes or breathing, and it runs on all three systems. It goes full screen by default, with a Strict mode that removes both skip and postpone. Meeting detection exists but is off until you turn it on.

LookAway, for people whose breaks land in meetings

LookAway's whole pitch is timing. It watches your camera and microphone, video playback, focus apps and screen sharing, and holds the break until you are done. It also has posture and blink reminders, usage stats, and an iPhone companion. It is the most complete app here.

Two things before you pay. The $19 licence is one Mac with one year of updates, renewable at half price, which one commenter on Hacker News called a subscription in disguise. And a well timed interruption is still an interruption: its hardest mode removes skipping entirely and it can lock your Mac when a break starts. If the price or the break screen is the problem, I compared five LookAway alternatives.

The ones that stay out of the way

Caesura lets you pick, break by break, between an overlay, a small banner and a plain notification, and it merges reminders that fall close together into one break. The illustrated wrist movements are a nice touch for anyone who types all day. €14 once, one licence for Mac, Windows and Linux, and at 3.3 MB it is the smallest paid app here.

DeskRest leans on a countdown that follows your cursor, so you see the break coming instead of being hit by it. It pauses for video, calls and Focus modes, and the exercises are the ones you write. It needs macOS 14.2.

Pandan is not really a break reminder, and that is the point. It shows how long you have been at the screen in the menu bar, and you can add a gentle reminder at an interval. No window, no exercise. Free, by Sindre Sorhus, and the current build needs macOS 26 with older builds still offered.

Mossy, if you never want to be interrupted

I built this one, so here is what you can check in a minute rather than what I would like you to believe.

Mossy never shows a break window. No dim, no lock, no full screen, and no setting to add one. A small plant sits in a corner of your desktop and dries out while you work, with the minutes written under it. When it is thirsty it asks, and if you say no it waits a while before asking again. If your microphone is in use or a video is playing, it holds the question until you are done. Ignoring it is a normal way to use it.

What is inside a break is different too. You write one sentence about what your breaks should be, and each break is written from it, one instruction at a time, with a timer. "Stretch my back." "Twenty push ups." "Teach me a Spanish word."

Measured on our relay between 11 September and 10 October 2026, across 30 machines that leave the daily counters on: 309 of the 504 breaks Mossy offered were taken, 61 %. So roughly four in ten get refused, which is fine, because refusing was never a failure here.

When not to use Mossy

If you work on Windows or Linux too, take Stretchly or Caesura. Mossy is macOS only.

If you want to be forced, Mossy is the wrong product. Stretchly's strict mode, Restier's Strict discipline and LookAway's hardest mode all remove the skip button. Nothing in Mossy ever will.

And if you want an app that talks to nothing, take Time Out or Pandan. Mossy sends one request per break, because the exercise is written on the spot. There is no account and no tracker, and the privacy page lists everything that leaves your Mac, but one request is not zero.

Left out, and why

I read the pages of four more apps that show up in the same searches and kept them out of the table. ForceBreak ($4.99) has had one version, in February 2026, and nothing since. Screen Break, the free menu bar one, is not notarised by Apple and ships with a default unlock password of 123456. Awareness plays a singing bowl every hour and is lovely, but its last version dates from 2011. Glance ($0.99) does one thing, the 20-20-20 rule for your eyes, and covers the screen to do it.

What I can tell you now that I could not in September

In September I wrote that I could not tell you whether Mossy survives month two. Here is the number, from the same relay, which keeps 60 days of history. 35 machines have used Mossy across 14 days or more, and 19 across 30 days or more. Of the 120 machines that first showed up before 10 September, 19 were still active in the week to 10 October. That is 16 %, it is not great, and it is a lot better than the two machines, both ours, I had in September.

FAQ

What is the best free break reminder app for Mac?

Stretchly if you also use Windows or Linux, Time Out if your Mac runs macOS 26, and Pandan if you only want a timer. Mossy is free too, with no paid tier behind it, but it never shows a break window: it wilts in the corner instead.

Which break app pauses during video calls?

LookAway watches your camera and microphone. DeskRest and Caesura pause for calls they support. Time Out can do it through its meeting scripts for FaceTime, Teams and Zoom. Restier has meeting detection but it is off by default. Mossy holds its reminder while your microphone is in use.

Do I need a break app if my Mac already has Screen Time?

Screen Time counts your hours after the fact. It does not tell you to stand up while you are still in the chair, which is the whole job of these apps.

Does Mossy run on an Intel Mac?

Yes. The download is a universal binary for Apple Silicon and Intel, it needs macOS 12 or later, and it is notarised by Apple, so there is no command to type after installing.
